What will you be using to make the server? Will you be writing a websocket code and launching it with node.js or are you looking to buy a server host or something?

Websocket is mighty good for stuff like making a online chat program/plugin but I don't think it's any good for making an MMO. The way it works is just too slow. You'd have a lot of problems with lags, disconnects and generally slow play. Buying a server isn't cheap but you're guaranteed to get a decent performance.


Think about it, see what you can do with node.js and see what would be better for the game. It's something your dev team will have to tackle. What use is an MMO without the online part?
